10 records achieved by India during T20 World Cup winning campaign

Ending their 11-year-long ICC silverware drought, India finally managed to end the jinx as captain Rohit Sharma lifted the T20 World Cup 2024 trophy at the Kensington Oval in Barbados on Saturday. The Men in Blue defeated South Africa by seven runs to win their second trophy, following a 17-year-long wait.

The last time India had won the prestigious tournament was back in 2007, as a young Mahindra Singh Dhoni inspired his men to lift the cup at the inaugural edition in South Africa. Even though the team has played numerous finals in ICC events, their last win in such was at the Champions Trophy in 2013. Dhoni was the captain then, completing his collection of winning the T20 World Cup, the ODI World Cup and Champions Trophy, and becoming the only captain to do so till date.

Saturday’s win by Rohit Sharma and his men broke and made new records.

Here are 10 such from the 2024 edition:

1) India joined past winners West Indies and England to lift the trophy more than once. While the co-hosts of the 2024 edition won it in 2012 and 2016, England emerged champions in 2010 and 2022.

2) Riding on Virat Kohli’s impressive 76 and Axar Patel attacking 47, India posted the highest total, 176/7, in a T20 World Cup final. The previous highest was Australia’s 173, set in the 2021 World Cup finals.

3) Kohli, who announced his retirement from the format, post India’s famous win, is the most successful batter in the history of the tournament. He also became the only player in the history of cricket to win the U-19 World Cup (2008), ODI World Cup (2011), Champions Trophy (2013) and T20 World Cup (2024). Kohli was the captain of the victorious U-19 team.

4) India’s captain Rohit Sharma and Bangladesh’s Shakib Al Hasan are the only two players to have played in all nine editions of the tournament. While Sharma has announced his retirement from the format, Shakib has a chance to go one up. With the recent win, Sharma has become the first player to win the silverware both as a player (2007) and as a captain (2024).

Based on his strong performance with the willow, Sharma was added to the team but surprisingly he was not named the skipper of the all-star squad.

5) Sharma also became the first captain to win 50 T20I matches.

6) Jasprit Bumrah, who picked up 15 wickets with an economy of 4.17 throughout the competition, became the first pacer to win the Player of the Tournament at the T20 World Cup.

7) With another Player of the Match award at the finals of the 2024 edition, Kohli surpassed teammate Suryakumar Yadav’s tally to win most (16) Player of the Match accolades in T20Is.

8) India’s win was special, as the team did not drop a match in the tournament, thereby becoming the first team to go undefeated. Sri Lanka (2009), Australia (2010), India (2014) and South Africa (2024) are the four teams who had remained unbeaten in the tournament before losing their first match in the finals.

9) The win broke the record for most matches (8) won during a single edition.

10) India’s Arshdeep Singh and Afghanistan’s Fazhalhaq Farooqi emerged as joint-highest wicket takers in not only this tournmant but in a single edition. With 17 wickets each, they went past the previous record of 16, set by Wanindu Hasaranga of Sri Lanka in the 2021 edition.
