Prince William and wife Kate, who became the Prince and Princess of Wales following the ascent of King Charles III to the throne of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth realms, are to visit Singapore later this year for The Earthshot Prize ceremony.
The Earthshot Prize is presented by the Royal Foundation, UK, of which Prince William is the founder and president. The 2022 award ceremony was held in Boston, United States. In November 2023, in partnership with Temasek Trust, Temasek, GenZero, and Conservation International, the Prize is coming to Singapore in order to give the centre-stage to environmental innovation in Southeast Asia.
A week’s activities are planned as part of the Earthshot awards, and the winners will be honoured at the awards evening on November 7, 2023.
The Earthshot Prize was established by Prince William in 2020, and the five areas covered under the Prize are:
● Protect and restore nature
● Clean our air
● Revive our oceans
● Build a waste-free world
● Fix our climate
The work mechanism of the Prize is to use “a fair and rigorous process to search, select, accelerate, award and scale the best and most ingenious solutions to repair and regenerate our planet, while simultaneously nurturing eco-innovators and their impact”. The winner in each of these five categories gets an award of GBP1 million, and the Prize will be given for a decade, which takes the total prize money to GBP50 million.
The Earthshot Prize announced that “after a hugely successful first two years”, the Prize formally became an independent charity.
