The fresh quake was recorded nearly a week after two major earthquakes jolted the region and left over 2,000 people dead.

"As a result of the earthquake, which rocked Herat at 8:06 a.m. local time today, one person was killed and 35 injured persons have been shifted to hospital," read a statement issued by the provincial government as quoted by Xinhua.

The number of casualties could go up, the statement further said.

Locals also said that two tremors in a short span of minutes rocked Herat and its vicinity on Sunday morning.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS) website, the earthquake occurred at a depth of 6.3 kms.

Meanwhile, UN agencies are appealing for urgent funds to assist the hundreds of thousands affected by deadly earthquakes in western Afghanistan.

Women and children make up over 90 per cent of the victims, according to UN agencies.

Making matters worse, on Thursday (October 12, 2023), a dust storm struck many affected villages, destroying hundreds of tents, including many at the Gazergah Transit Centre, where many displaced families were being sheltered.

Families impacted were moved from the Centre to a school in Herat city where they will require food and non-food relief items, according to UN Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
