Pune Porsche killer-driver gets bail with ‘homework’ condition, told to write a short essay on road accidents

Social media users are fuming after a 17-year-old teen, who killed two people while driving under influence, got bail within hours of committing the crime in Pune’s Kalyani Nagar on Sunday. While the bail has got people protesting, what caught the attention of several others was the homeworkish nature of the bail condition.

As per reports, a six-point condition was set for Vedant Agarwal, who knocked two bike riders, including a woman, with his Porsche on the wee hours on Sunday. One of the six conditions states that the 17-year-old has to write a 300-word essay on the effect of road accident.

What are the other conditions?

There are five other conditions apart from the aforementioned one. They are:

  • Visiting RTO. Study rules and regulations. Present it before Juvenile Justice Board.
  • Assist RTO officer. Study traffic rules for 15 days.
  • Visit a de-addiction counselling centre.
  • Consult a psychologist and a psychiatric doctor.
-Keep away from bad company in the future.

Wanted to try him as an adult, rejected: Police

Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar said at a press conference that law enforcement officers wanted to try Vedant Agarwal as an adult, but their demand was rejected. Kumar said that an appeal will be made against the previous verdict in the Session’s Court.

Several arrests made

Meanwhile, police have already arrested the father of the killer driver. Real estate developer Vishal Agrawal was arrested from Aurangabad city of Maharashtra after a case was registered against him on Monday. He was reportedly on the run.

Police also nabbed the owner and manager of a bar in Pune that allegedly served liquor to the underaged boy. A video of the 17-year-old drinking inside the bar is now going viral on social media.

As per Hindustan Times, five people, including the father, were booked under relevant sections of the Motor Vehicles Act (MVA) and the Juvenile Justice Act (JJA).

It’s a murder, says victim’s family

The two deceased were identified as Aneesh Awadhiya and Ashwini Koshta. Both were aged 24, hailed from Madhya Pradesh, and worked as software engineers.

One of Awadhiya’s family members, Atmaram Awadhiya, demanded that Agarwal’s bail be cancelled. “Two people have died in this accident. This is completely wrong. We want strict punishment. The bail granted to the accused should be cancelled,” Atmaram Awadhiya said.

Another family member, Akhilesh Awadhiya, called the death a “murder, not an accident”.

The accident happened at 3:15 am when Awadiya and Koshta were returning home with friends on motorcycles after partying at a club, according to the police. The two riders were flung into the air under the impact of the crash, causing them to land on another car. They died instantly. After hitting them, the car crashed into the pavement and came to a halt.

No training, no learner’s licence

Several facts have emerged after the accident. As per reports, the boy, four months short of his 18th birthday, didn’t have a learner’s licence, which can be obtained by Indian citizens after turning 16. He also reportedly lacked training.

“Upon inquiry, the minor said his father handed over the grey Porsche to him despite knowing that he had no driver’s training and did not have a driver’s licence. He has also said his father allowed him to party with his friends and that his father was aware that he was consuming alcohol,” the FIR registered by Assistant Police Inspector Vishwanath Todkari at Yerwada Police Station read.

Not only that, the expensive car, bought just months before the Sunday accident, did not have a vehicle registration plate at the time of the collision.

During the probe, it emerged that the boy visited two restaurants with a group of 10 to 12 friends on Saturday night. The group was served several pegs of hard liquor along with food.

Social media users react

Quite naturally, social media users had some things to say about the terms set for the bail.

“I wud be surprised if he can write 10 road/driving rules other than red/green lights and zebra crossing,” said one X user.

Another wanted to know the definition of certain words used in the conditions. “Define “Bad Company” and Future…,” the user commented.

A third user made a prediction, stating, “And after he’s complied with these conditions, he is back on the road to create mayhem all over again…”

A fourth added one more condition to the list. “Six months in terrorist operations with brave soldiers looking after their uniform polishing their shoes,” the user wrote.

Another user came down hard on the judicial system for being allegedly easy on the teenager. “Seriously. What the f**k is this. That a**h*le deserves serious punishment. Our legal system is a joke.”
