Police have arrested an Indian-origin man for allegedly killing one woman and injuring another in a shooting incident in New Jersey’s Middlesex County in the US.
The arrested person has been identified as Gaurav Gill.
“Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone and Chief Dennis McFadden of the Carteret Police Department announced today that Gaurav Gill has been arrested and charged in connection with the shooting that occurred yesterday, June 12, 2024, in the Borough of Carteret,” read an official statement issued by the Middlesex County.
Indian-origin woman Jasvir Kaur, 29, died in the shooting incident.
“The other victim, a 20-year-old woman, of Carteret, is still in critical condition at University Hospital in Newark,” read the statement.
An initial investigation led by Detective Keith Cassens of the Carteret Police Department and Detective Javier Morillo of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office has led to the apprehension of Guarav Gill, 19, of Kent, WA.
On June 12, 2024, Gill was arrested and charged with one count of first-degree Murder, two counts of second-degree Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose, one count of second-degree Unlawful Possession of a Weapon, one count of fourth-degree Possession of a High-Capacity Magazine and one count of first-degree Attempted Murder.
Gill is being held at the Middlesex County Adult Correctional Center pending the results of his Pre-trial detention hearing.
An investigation into the incident is currently underway.
According to reports, the deceased and the arrested person belonged to the north Indian state of Punjab.
They reportedly knew each other since they took IELTS coaching classes together in Jalandhar.
The Indian Consulate in New York reacted to the incident and posted on X, “Deeply saddened to learn of the tragic demise of Ms. Jasvir Kaur and injuries to Ms. Gagandeep Kaur in a shooting on Roosevelt Av, Cartaret, New Jersey.”
