“It’s almost impossible…”: Coldplay announces retirement amid ticket resale controversy in India

Renowned British band Coldplay has announced its retirement amid a raging ticket resale controversy in India. The band has three shows at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on January 18, 19 and 21, 2025, as part of its ‘Music of the Spheres World Tour 2025’. Chris Martin, the lead singer, confirmed the band’s decision recently, reports said.

If you’re a Coldplay fan, you need not worry now. Martin and his bandmates will officially break apart after releasing their 12th studio album. Coldplay’s 10th album, Moon Music, is set to be out on October 4, 2024. So, there’s still time for the band to disband.

Speaking to Apple Music 1, Martin said, “We are only going to do 12 proper albums and that’s real.” He said this will allow the band to have quality control. “Having that limit means the quality control is so high right now and for a song to make it, it’s almost impossible, which is great. And so, where we could be coasting, we’re trying to improve.”

Coldplay was formed in London in 1997. The band has four performing members: Chris Martin, Jonny Buckland, Guy Berryman and Will Champion.

Martin said the decision to limit the release to 12 was inspired by his heroes. “There’s only seven Harry Potters. There’s only 12 ½ Beatles’ albums, there’s about the same for Bob Marley, so all our heroes,” he said, as quoted by News 18. “To make an album great as a band, it’s such a lot of wrangling of people, and I want to give the others some of their life for themselves.”

While the band will retire, the musicians will continue to collaborate with each other.

Meanwhile, the Mumbai police have recorded the statement of the chief operating officer of online ticket aggregator BookMyShow in connection with a complaint alleging black marketing of tickets for shows of Coldplay, an official said on Tuesday.

Anil Makhija, COO of the company, appeared before officials of the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) on Monday to record his statement, the official said.

The EOW had on Saturday summoned BookMyShow’s chief executive officer (CEO) Ashish Hemrajani in connection with a complaint by an advocate accusing the ticketing platform. However, he failed to appear before the police, he said.

The highly-anticipated Coldplay concert in Mumbai in January 2025 has been clouded by concerns about ticketing scams on BookMyShow, as millions of fans scrambled online for a limited number of tickets.
