At least 35 people died and 43 others were injured after a man rammed his car into people in Zhuhai city of China on Tuesday, media reports said on Tuesday.

The incident took place around 7:48 p.m. Monday, when citizens were exercising at the sports centre, reported Xinhua news agency.

The driver of the car was identified as a 62-year-old man. His surname was identified as Fan.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the incident was allegedly triggered by Fan’s dissatisfaction with the property division outcomes over his divorce, according to media reports.

“Officers found Fan self-harming with a knife in the vehicle, immediately stopped him and sent him to hospital for treatment. Due to severe neck injuries, Fan is currently unconscious, still undergoing emergency treatment and unable to be interrogated,” police said in the statement as quoted by CNN.
Fan has been detained on suspicion of “endangering public safety,” according to the statement.

The incident occurred ahead of the civil and military airshow which is scheduled to be held in the city from November 12 to November 17.

In October, police arrested a man after he stabbed and injured five people outside an elementary school in Beijing.
