Abu Dhabi to ban single-use plastics by 2021

Abu Dhabi’s Environment Agency (EAD) has announced a policy that will ban single-use plastics from 2021 and will parallelly encourage the use of reusable bags.

The Abu Dhabi Government Media Office shared this announcement in a series of tweets. 

The policy will also introduce a fine for usage of plastics that have sustainable alternatives. 

Other schemes that will be introduced along with these is a bottle return deposit scheme in retail outlets. 

With the combination of these policies, the EAD hopes to ensure transformation towards reusable items rather than a shift from plastic to non-plastic single-use items.
