Ashish Bisht, who debuted in National Award-winning director Onir’s latest film Shab, which was out last week, has earned many accolades for his honest performance. He is said to have a natural rawness which works well for his character; that might be because the character he plays in films is very similar to him.
In real life, Ashish comes from a middle-class family in Delhi. He used to be an executive at mall activations before coming to Mumbai and to try his luck at modelling and acting. Shab deals with the complexities of relationships in urban life and Ashish plays the character of Azfar, a small-town boy who moves to the big city of Delhi to kick-start his modelling career.
Just as in the film, Bisht comes from a non-glamorous background, and aims to create his own mark in the entertainment industry. It was said in one of the reviews that Ashish has an air of innocence about his presence that adds to the credibility of his character and makes his efforts shine through.
Talking about playing a character that is so close to his real self, Ashish said, "The fact that the role I played in the film was so relatable certainly helped me to experience what the character was feeling. Many of the nuances were also picked up from my cousins who hail from villages in Uttarakhand and have never been to big cities. I am ever so thankful to Onir to choose me to play the role of Azfar."
After emoting his character’s dilemma, desperation and helplessness and getting under his skin in Shab, the talented actor is all set to give yet another stellar performance in Onir’s next film titled Veda.
