The interim government in Bangladesh, which is being led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, will take oath at the Bangabhaban on Thursday evening, as per the local Dhaka Tribune. President Shahabuddin will administer the oath of office to the new government.
As per reports, the oath-taking ceremony will be held at 8pm on Thursday. The event will be attended by 400 people. The interim government will consist of 15 members, reports said, quoting Bangladesh Army Chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman.
Bangladesh will be ruled by an interim government after 17 years, as the President dissolved the erstwhile Parliament on Tuesday after former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina tendered an abrupt resignation on Monday and fled to India in the face of massive anti-government protests in the country.
Following Hasina’s ouster, General Waker-Uz-Zaman took the lead, holding talks with leaders of political parties, civil society, and students, and announced the formation of the interim government.
A meeting was held at Bangabhaban, the President’s official residence, where the chiefs of the three armed forces, two professors from Dhaka University, and coordinators of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement were present, the newspaper said.
Yunus’s name as the head the interim government was proposed during the meeting and received a nod from the President.
Bangladesh’s last interim government was headed by Dr Fakhruddin Ahmed, who took office following the chaos preceding January 11, 2007.
Meanwhile, the Yunus-led government has received backing from most political parties in Bangladesh, except the Awami League.
The chief opposition party in Bangladesh, BNP, has called for a quick election to form the new government.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said, “We will urge the President to ensure the administration performs its duties properly. At the same time, I request the quick formation of an interim government and the holding of fair elections within three months.”
“Everyone should be vigilant so that no one can steal our victory. We want to build a humanitarian state, a state of equality,” Alamgir added.
