Biden, Harris briefed about situation in Middle East as Iran threatens to avenge Haniyeh’s assassination

Amid a probable escalation in the Middle East between Israel and Iran, top leaders in the US, including President Joe Biden, have held talks, where the POTUS and his deputy were briefed about the situation in the region.

“Earlier, @VP and I were briefed in the Situation Room on developments in the Middle East,” part of a tweet from the US President’s official X account read.

“We received updates on threats posed by Iran and its proxies, diplomatic efforts to de-escalate regional tensions, and preparations to support Israel should it be attacked again.

“We also discussed the steps we are taking to defend our forces and respond to any attack against our personnel in a manner and place of our choosing,” it added.

As per reports, Biden and Secretary of State Antony Blinken are trying to pacify the situation in Middle East, while engaging in diplomacy with the prime actors — Israel and Iran. The region became tensed, especially after Israel’s suspected involvement in the assassination of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran.

“We are engaged in intense diplomacy, pretty much around the clock, with a very simple message — all parties must refrain from escalation,” Blinken said. “It’s also critical that we break this cycle by reaching a ceasefire in Gaza.”

Biden, on the other hand, held talks with King Abdullah II of Jordan.

“Today, I connected with King Abdullah II of Jordan on our efforts to de-escalate regional tensions, including through an immediate ceasefire and hostage release deal,” he said on X.

“The United States is proud to be Jordan’s partner in promoting peace and stability,” the US President added.

As per reports, several US personnel were injured in a rocket attack on a base in Iraq on Monday.

Biden, who has six more months before his tenure ends, is hoping to end the Gaza war.
