For the second time a team from out of Singapore won the RedDot Bhangra Competition (RDBC). Funjabi Bhangra of Hong Kong followed the footsteps of last year's winners Ranjhey by winning the trophy amidst solid competition.
Held on Saturday, July 20, at the Gateway Theatre, RDBC 2019 drew an eager crowd of over 570 people. High Commissioner of India to Singapore, Jawed Ashraf, graced the event.
This year’s competition is the first in Asia to feature judges from three major bhangra circuits in the world – Jessica Gar Lai Cheung from the United Kingdom, Keshav Mantha from the United States of America and Amitoj Thind from Australia.
Three hours of power-packed performances later, Funjabi from Hong Kong emerged as the winner of RDBC 2019, followed by Joshiley Bhangra (Singapore) coming in a close second, and SherePunjab Bhangra (Singapore) was placed in the third position.
“Putting together an international competition in this way serves to bring a different dimension to the local performing arts scene,” said Hargobind Singh, Director, RedDot Bhangra.
“It encompasses the cultural diversity that Singaporeans stand for, and we are honoured that RedDot Bhangra is taking the mantle to push the boundaries of the regional bhangra circuit.”
