To give a boost to environmental initiatives in Singapore, the Government has decided to give grants to interest groups and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) from April 1. The grant will be given for holding green events in Singapore in support of the Year of Climate Action.
Making this announcement, Amy Khor, Senior Minister of State for Environment and Water Resources of Singapore, said, “Each group will be eligible for up to SGD5,000 on a reimbursement basis. Interested groups have until the end of the year to apply for the grant.”
The Minister was speaking at an eco-carnival event at Our Tampines Hub in Singapore.
Khor made the announcement regarding Climate Action SG Grant during the Committee of Supply debate earlier this month, to help organisations defray costs of developing programmes to raise awareness of climate change.
Singapore has designated 2018 as the Year of Climate Action. The move will help Singapore's current efforts to build resilience against climate change, including diversifying the water supply and enhancing food security.
While touching on the subject of energy conservation, Dr Khor said, “The Mandatory Energy Labelling Scheme (MELS) for household appliances, which currently covers air-conditioners, refrigerators, clothes dryers, televisions and general-purpose lamps, will be expanded to cover more types of lamps.
“This includes the compact fluorescent lamp without the integrated ballast, the T8 fluorescent tube as well as the LED direct replacements,” she added.
The Minister also informed that the National Environment Agency (NEA) will be consulting the industry and public on a proposal for this matter.
