Commuters boarding metro trains on the North-South line from April 16 have another reason to smile – the fleet of new trains has had fresh features installed, including comprehensive information displays and energy conserving LED lighting. Further, there will also be areas marked for wheelchairs.
The trains boast of large LCD screens providing various details, including current and upcoming stops and places of interest near stations. They also provide information about station layouts and other details.
These trains are also fitted with LED lights which conserve more energy and are brighter compared to the fluorescent lights used in older trains. These carriages have been manufactured by Japan-based Kawasaki Heavy Industries and China-based CSR Sifang.
To help the differently-abled, two of the six car trains will have separate areas marked out for wheelchairs.
A total of 57 new trains will be added to the North-South and East-West lines for enlarging the capacity of SMRT and they will arrive by 2019. However, 45 of these trains have already arrived since May 2015 and stringent tests have been carried out on their safety, functionality, comfort and performance.
