Five things to do on the weekend of June 3-4

Summer is in full swing right now, and the DBS Marina Regatta is happening this weekend! Complete with a pop-up urban beach and obstacle course featuring the famed local singer Nathan Hartono. 

Or if you like some quiet time, head to a museum or catch a movie at the Mexican Film Festival. 

1. Ghost Nets of the Ocean @ACM

Ghost Nets of the Ocean is a spectacular marine-themed exhibition created by indigenous and non-indigenous artists from Erub Arts on Darnley Island, Torres Strait, Australia.

These colourful woven sculptures, hanging suspended and dramatically lit throughout the gallery, show the peoples connections to the sea, and strive to generate awareness of ocean pollution, recycling, and conservation of the marine environment.

2. Singapore Street Festival

The Singapore Street Festival is a platform for youth to showcase their talents in the performing/visual arts, fashion, sports, entrepreneurship, technology, and design!

Held from 4th June – 9th July 2017, the event will encompass events such as the street art live painting and exhibition, the Singapore National Kendama Championship, Urban Street Football and Asian Global Bellydance.

3. Kwok Kian-Woon – Public Conversations: “Garden, Ocean, Archipelago: Re-imagining Space, Social Life, Singapore”

Singapore is proudly a garden city, or a city in a garden. In this public conversation with SHS President, Dr Chua Ai Lin, Prof Kwok Kian-Woon explores what lies beyond the metaphor of Singapore as a "garden."

Professor Kwok Kian-Woon is a sociologist at the Nanyang Technological University; as a citizen, he is an active participant in civil society.

4. Mexican Film Festival

Curated by The Projector, in partnership with The Embassy of Mexico, this year's Mexican Film Festival presents five recent films that span the genres of thriller, romance and dark comedy. The films are Desierto by Jonas Cuaron, You'll Know What to do With Me by Katina Medina Mora, Bleak Street by Arturo Ripstein, Güeros by Alonso Ruizpalacios and Mr Pig by Diego Luna.

5. DBS Marina Regatta 2017

Singapore’s biggest water sports festival returns with a packed slate of exciting and unforgettable experiences. Happening from 1 to 4 June, the event will see the return of Singapore’s only pop-up urban beach and the region’s finest dragonboaters battling it out at the Bay.

If you’d loved US game show Wipeout, get ready to navigate your way through the Battle Bay – nine challenging water obstacles spanning over 11,000 square feet. If competing isn’t your thing, chill out at the pop-up urban beach.
