5. Un/Changing Landscapes – a walk from Da Men Lou (Ann Siang/Club St) to See Pai Por (SGH)
For many, a visit to Kreta Ayer (also known as Niu Che Shui) is a must-do as part of the annual preparations for the Lunar New Year.
This area has been a key part of the collective consciousness of local Chinese over the centuries. It sits between two hills — Ann Siang Hill and Mount Farquhar (now disappeared from maps) — and has seen many changes since urban renewal commenced in the early 1960s. Today, Kreta Ayer is one of the key conservation areas of Singapore and a showcase of the various styles of the vernacular Singapore shophouse. Let us go on a stroll from Da Men Lou, through Ngau Chair Shui to See Pai Por, and reflect on the un/changing landscape of one of our key conservation areas.
