The journey of young Kathak dancer Avinav Mukharji from the small nondescript Indian town of Singrauli to Singapore can be summarised in one word: ‘Incredible’. He is presently a faculty member of Apsara Arts Dance Academy of Singapore and teaches Kathak, a dance form of Northern India.
His first, riveting, solo-performance in Singapore, ‘SAMVAD'(Conversation) – an interactive experience with Kathak’ won him plenty of fans in a country where Bharatnatyam rules the roost as far as Indian classical dance forms are concerned.
SAMVAD was the first of the inaugural dance experience programme created by Apsaras Arts called ‘DARSHANA-Intimate Dance Series’, which featured solo performances across the genres of Indian classical dance.
Soumee De Girotra, co-founder of “Ethos -Exploring The Odissi Spirit,” a community of Odissi dancers in Singapore, gave an Odissi performance.
Dancing was a childhood love of Avinav’s. His mother initiated him into Kathak as she felt classical dance would give him a solid foundation and deep understanding of taal and laya (rhythm of music). Here is what the dancer @Work had to say about his journey so far.
