The Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority (AVA) has recalled Dumex Mamil Gold Infant Milk Formula – Step 1 (850g), after detecting bacteria in the product samples.
The importer, Danone Dumex, has been directed to recall the implicated batch. The recall has since been completed, AVA said in a press statement on Aug 20, 2018.
Cronobacter sakazakii bacteria – a bacterium found in the environment that can survive dry conditions, such as dry food like infant formula and powdered milk – was found in the samples.
While cronobacter infections are generally rare, they can be fatal to newborns as they may cause meningitis or sepsis.
Examples of symptoms displayed by infants with Cronobacter infection include fever, poor feeding or lethargy. These symptoms are not specific to the bacteria, and parents or caregivers should seek immediate medical assistance should their infants feel unwell.
AVA also advised that good practices to ensure proper hygiene should be taken in preparing infant formula.
These include washing hands with soap and water before handling of items which will be in contact with the infant, proper sanitation of items meant for feeding baby, as well as ensuring infant formula is prepared in a clean environment.
Consumers who have purchased the affected product are advised not to consume it. For enquiries on refund, consumers may contact Dumex at their hotline 1800 265 3188.
