Hezbollah’s drone attack on Sunday caused significant damage to Israel’s base on Mount Hermon. The Lebanese group attacked Israel’s technical and electronic reconnaissance centre in the area, located north of Golan Heights, to avenge the death of a senior member on Saturday.
Quoting the group, reports said the Israeli centre was set on fire by “successive squadrons of assault drones”.
Hezbollah claimed that this was the first time the group attacked the Mount Hermon centre since the 1973 Arab-Israeli war. As per a Xinhua news agency, quoting the Lebanese militant group, the operation is hailed as the largest by Hezbollah’s air force since October 8, 2023.
Lebanese military sources told the news agency that the Lebanese army positions monitored the launch of several drones on Sunday afternoon from the Lebanese side to Israel, some of which had been intercepted by the Iron Dome system and Israeli warplanes.
The Israel Defense Forces on Saturday said Meitham Mustafa Altaar, a key operative in Hezbollah’s Aerial Defense Unit, was eliminated.
“Meitham led many of the unit’s activities and took part in the planning and carrying out of numerous terrorist attacks against Israelis. Meitham also flew to Iran multiple times, where he gained knowledge and assisted in building up Hezbollah’s force and arsenal of Iranian weapons,” IDF posted on X.
IDF said his elimination significantly harms the capabilities of Hezbollah’s Aerial Defense Unit. The Israeli Defense Force also confirmed the attack and posted on X: “Hezbollah fired massive barrages of projectiles toward northern Israel earlier today.”
“Approx. 200 projectiles were launched toward the Golan area, some of which were intercepted by the IDF Aerial Defense Array and the IAF,” IDF said.
“Over 20 suspicious aerial targets were launched toward Israeli territory, several were intercepted,” it said.
