During his visit, both countries are expected to sign a major defence cooperation agreement, which will help them work together more closely on security matters.

This agreement is part of a larger effort to improve relations in various areas, including economy, energy, and digital technology.

In addition to the defence pact, the two countries are set to sign eight memoranda of understanding (MoUs) on key issues such as health, energy, and digitalisation.

One of the MoUs is particularly focused on providing Sri Lanka with more affordable energy. This is seen as a crucial step for Sri Lanka, which is currently facing significant economic difficulties.

The visit also involves high-level talks between the leaders of both countries on a range of issues.

One of the main topics will be the restructuring of Sri Lanka’s debt, which is a major concern for the country at the moment.

PM Modi and Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake will also discuss enhancing connectivity between the two nations and further cooperation in areas like trade, infrastructure, and technology.

Upon his arrival in Colombo on Friday, PM Modi was warmly welcomed by hundreds of people, including members of the Indian community, despite the heavy rain. He was greeted at the airport by senior ministers from Sri Lanka’s Cabinet, including the Foreign Minister, Health Minister, and Labour Minister.

“The rains were no deterrent for a spectacular welcome by the Indian community in Colombo. I was deeply moved by their warmth and enthusiasm. Grateful to them!” the Indian PM posted on X alongside several pictures.

According to reports, India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri highlighted the deep historical and cultural ties between India and Sri Lanka, saying that the relationship has grown into a strong economic and technical partnership in recent years.

He also mentioned that Sri Lanka is an important part of India’s “Neighbourhood First” policy, which aims to strengthen ties with neighbouring countries.

This visit is the first time PM Modi is being hosted by President Dissanayake in his role as President of Sri Lanka. The visit also provides an opportunity to review the progress made on initiatives agreed upon during President Dissanayake’s state visit to India earlier.

PM Modi will also visit Anuradhapura on Sunday with President Dissanayake, where they will inaugurate development projects funded by India. The two leaders will pay their respects at the historic Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi temple, a site of great significance for both India and Sri Lanka.

During their discussions, the two leaders will also address issues related to fishermen, including the release and return of Indian fishermen and their boats. The visit marks a significant step in further strengthening the ties between India and Sri Lanka, with both countries working together to overcome challenges and build a shared future.
