Indian PM Narendra Modi on Friday met US President Donald Trump in the White House when he referred to the ongoing Ukraine-Russia conflict and said India is not a neutral country and it stands on the side of peace on the issue of conflict.
“India is not neutral. India is on the side of peace,” Modi was quoted as saying by the media.
He said solutions could not be found on the battlefield.
He said India supports Trump’s initiatives to end war.
The meeting between the two world leaders occurred at a time when US President Donald Trump on Thursday announced sweeping “reciprocal tariffs” which would impact both allies and competitors.
The announcement paved the way for a dramatic escalation of an international trade war that economists warn could fuel inflation even in India.
Speaking in the Oval Office, Trump announced the imposition of reciprocal duties citing that US allies were often “worse than our enemies” on matters of trade.
Speaking on terrorism, Modi said: “India and America have been together in the fight against terrorism.”
MAGA
Modi referred to the equation of development shared by India and America when Modi later posted on X: “President Trump often talks about MAGA”
“In India, we are working towards a Viksit Bharat, which in American context translates into MIGA. And together, the India-USA have a MEGA partnership for prosperity!.” he said.
MAGA refers to Trump’s ‘Make America Great Again’ (MAGA) slogan.
Modi later wrote on X that he had an ‘excellent’ meeting with Trump.
“An excellent meeting with @POTUS @realDonaldTrump at the White House. Our talks will add significant momentum to the India-USA friendship!” he said.
This was Modi’s first meeting with Trump since the US President took charge of the government on January 20.
Modi arrived in the US after concluding his visit to France.
He attended the AI Action Summit in Paris.
