Winning the women’s vault, Indian gymnast Dipa Karmakar made India proud by becoming the first athlete from the country to clinch a gold medal in the Asian Senior Championships on Sunday (May 26, 2024).
On the medal-winning day in Uzbekistan, the Indian gymnast scored an average of 13.566 in the vault final.
The silver and bronze medals went to North Koreans Kim Son Hyang (13.466) and Jo Kyong Byol (12.966).
Dipa had won the bronze medal in the same event in 2015.
The Indian gymnast summed up her emotional state in her X post following the gold medal victory. “It’s been a long journey but we are finally here. Grateful,” Dipa wrote.

The Sports Authority of India congratulated the Indian gymnast and posted on X: “History created at The Asian Gymnastics Championship Dipa Karmakar becomes the st gymnast to win at this prestigious championship, topping the podium in women’s vault.”

Dipa became the first Indian gymnast to compete in the Olympics and finished fourth in the women’s vault at Rio 2016. That has been the best display by any Indian woman gymnast in the Olympics so far.
