Police in southern India’s Bengaluru arrested a man for blackmailing and exploiting a 20-year-old girl. The person, identified as Mohan Kumar, extorted over INR 2.5 crores (USD 295,260) from the victim, as per reports.
Mohan Kumar filmed intimate and explicit videos of the girl and allegedly used those to threaten and extort money.
This went on for some time before the girl finally mustered courage and filed a complaint, leading to the arrest.
As per reports, the victim was acquainted with Kumar, as they studied in the same school. While they lost touch, they later met and fell in love.
The couple went on a trip, where Kumar filmed several intimate videos, including some where his face wasn’t visible. Later, he used those to blackmail the victim.
Scared at first, she withdrew INR 1.25 crore (USD 147,630) from her grandmother’s account and gave it to Kumar. But as the threats continued, the girl additionally paid him INR 1.32 crore (USD 155,897) worth of cash, jewellery and a luxury car.
These amounts were deposited to several accounts provided by Kumar, including the latter’s father’s account.
Unable to provide any more money, the girl sought help from police and filed a complaint.
Bengaluru Police Commissioner B Dayanand said the crime was well-planned. “The accused extorted ₹ 2.57 crore, of which ₹ 80 lakh has been recovered,” he said, as quoted by NDTV.
