A statue of Mahatma Gandhi outside the Indian Embassy in Washington DC has been defaced during the anti-racism protests that have rocked the United States for the last week.
The desecration of the statue comes after many instances of vandalism, looting and destruction caused by certain sections of people as widespread protests continue across states over the death of African-American George Floyd while in police custody. The United States Park Police has said that they have launched a probe into the damage done to the statue.
The US Ambassador to India, Ken Juster, condemned the incident and said that he is "appalled" by the "awful violence and vandalism".
"So sorry to see the desecration of the Mahatma Gandhi statue in America. Please accept our sincere apologies. Appalled as well by the horrific death of George Floyd & awful violence & vandalism. We stand against prejudice & discrimination of ant type. We will recover & be better," he tweeted.
