Dr Premanand Nayak, an orthopaedic surgeon, passed away at the age of 80.

Dr Nayak lived in Ontario, Canada, from 1972 to 1980, and later moved to Cincinnati, where he practised until his retirement in 2012.

His desire to pursue medicine stemmed from his deep compassion for the needy in his native country India. For years, he worked in a government hospital in India and provided free services to the poor.

He specialised in orthopaedics and moved to Ontario, where he specialised in arthroscopic knee surgery, carpel tunnel surgery and rotator cuff repairs.

“I continually advise my patients to quit smoking and to lose weight if they want healthy bones,” he had said.

Nayak had completed his MBBS and MS degrees through Kasturba Medical College Manipal, before securing FRCS degree from Canada. He had settled down in Cincinnati, USA, where he was respected to be one of the finest orthopaedic surgeons.

Dr Nayak is survived by his wife Suneethi, his two sons Naresh and Suresh, his daughter Sangeeta and seven grandchildren.
