Indian PM Narendra Modi on Friday (June 14, 2024) arrived in Italy to attend the G7 Outreach Summit, where leaders from Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, the United States and the European Union (EU) are meeting to discuss several pressing geo political issues. Modi said he is looking forward to engaging in productive discussions with world leaders.

This is Modi’s first foreign trip since coming to power in India for the third straight term.

“Landed in Italy to take part in the G7 Summit. Looking forward to engaging in productive discussions with world leaders. Together, we aim to address global challenges and foster international cooperation for a brighter future,” the Indian PM posted on X.

He is visiting Italy following an invitation from his Italian counterpart Giorgia Meloni.

In his departure speech, Modi said: “I am glad that my first visit in the third consecutive term is to Italy for the G-7 Summit.”

“I warmly recall my visit to Italy for the G20 Summit in 2021. Prime Minister Meloni’s two visits to India last year were instrumental in infusing momentum and depth in our bilateral agenda,” he said.

“We remain committed to consolidate the India-Italy strategic partnership, and bolster cooperation in the Indo-Pacific and the Mediterranean regions,” he said.

What will be the key area of discussion during the outreach session?

During the discussions at the Outreach session, the focus would be on artificial intelligence, energy, Africa, and the Mediterranean, the Indian PM said.

Modi led his Bharatiya Janata Party to a third straight victory in the Indian general polls this year.

Modi said: “It will be an opportunity to bring greater synergy between the outcomes of the G20 Summit held under India’s Presidency and the forthcoming G7 Summit, and deliberate on issues which are crucial for the Global South.”

This time the summit will take place in the luxury resort of Borgo Egnazia in Italy’s Apulia region from June 13 to 15.
