The Narpani Community Carnival will be held on Sunday, July 2, from 9am to 5pm at the Singapore Zoo.
S Iswaran, Minister for Trade and Industry (Industry), Adviser to Narpani Pearavai will be joining 4,000 residents from all walks of life, including low-income families, new citizens and permanent residents at the carnival.
Organised by People’s Association (PA) Indian Activity Executive Committees Council (Narpani Pearavai), the carnival also allows residents to spend quality time with their families, neighbours, and make new friends.
2017 marks the 40th anniversary of the IAECs. As part of the celebration, Narpani Pearavai, together with 97 IAECs island-wide, have jointly embarked on an outreach programme entitled Project CARE.
“We hope to call out to Indian residents and the community at large to show care for the less privileged and in the process bond the community closer together”, said K. Ramamoorthy, PBM, Chairman of Narpani Pearavai.
60 IAECs have committed 60 initiaitves under Project CARE throughout the year, which will benefit about 18,000 residents. One of the initiaitves will see West Coast IAEC chaperoning some 50 elderly participants from Sunlove Home to enjoy a day of fun at the Narpani Community Carnival.
Moreover, in its efforts to engage youths, Narpani Pearavai Youth Committee (NPY), in collaboration with IAECs, will spearhead its first Narpani Youth Sports Interest Groups (SINGAMS) to promote youth active participation in sports.
Seven IAECs have come on board to pilot this project focusing on popular sports such as badminton, captains Ball, running and futsal. Through this initiative, the IAECs aim to reach out to about 1,500 youths through formation of some 60 sports Interest groups over the next two years. NPY hopes to recruit and induct more youths into community work via these sports engagements.
Shivaneshwaran, who is currently a member of NPY, was introduced to the grassroots network through sports engagement. "The exposure and importance of PA grassroots network has developed passion within me to contribute back to the community. I am confident that through sports engagement, we will be able to draw more youths and engage them in various programmes and platforms,” he enthused.
