The most controversial movie of the year gets thumbs up from major film critics
Amidst the raging protest by Rajput Karni Sena across many states in India, Sanjay Leela Bhansali directorial Padmaavat is getting appreciating reviews after the special screening in Mumbai yesterday.
The screening was attended by the main star cast of the film, including Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor.
Based on a Sufi poem of the same name written in 1540 by Malik Muhammad Jayasi, Bhansali has added his own flair and interpretation to Padmaavat. The film is receiving good reviews from the film critics.
Starting last year, the film has been surrounded by controversies when Lokendra Singh Kalvi, chief of Shri Rajput Karni Sena, has called upon the community members to push for a complete ban on Padmaavat.
Earlier this month, Kalvi said at a press conference in Jaipur that “the members of the Rajput community will gather in Chittorgarh on January 27 to give a clear message that the sacrifice of Rani Padmavati has not gone in vain.”
The Supreme Court of India had refused a plea to ban the release of the film and allowed it to be released. The film is slated to release January 25.
Padmaavat is the story of honour, valour and obsession which revolves around queen Padmavati who is known for her exceptional beauty along with a strong sense of justice. She was the wife of Maharawal Ratan Singh and pride of the Kingdom of Chittor, a prosperous kingdom in the north-west of India. The legend of her beauty reaches the reigning Sultan of Hindustan – Alauddin Khilji. The Sultan who is a tyrant, is fixated on wanting anything that is of exceptional beauty for himself.
