Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi shed light today on his mystery announcement on Monday stating that he might quit social media. The PM said that on the occasion of Women's Day on March 8, he would hand over his social media accounts to women who have been inspirations.
"This Women's Day, I will give away my social media accounts to women whose life & work inspire us. This will help them ignite motivation in millions. Are you such a woman or do you know such inspiring women? Share such stories using #SheInspiresUs", tweeted Modi.
Modi had on Monday evening tweeted, "This Sunday, thinking of giving up my social media accounts on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram & YouTube. Will keep you all posted".
The tweet created a flutter as within minutes #NoSir started trending with social media users urging Modi not to give up his social media accounts.
The Congress also took a swipe at the prime minister, with Rahul Gandhi tweeting "Give up hatred, not social media accounts" after tagging Modi's post.
Tuesday’s announcement cleared up all speculation and showed how the PM would be celebrating women on the occasion of Women's Day.
Modi is one of the most-followed world leaders on social media. He has 53.3 million followers on Twitter, 44 million on Facebook and 35.2 million on Instagram.
The Twitter handle of the Prime Minister's Office has 32 million followers.
