In an effort to reach out to Indians living abroad, Congress chief Rahul Gandhi will interact with the Indian diaspora in Singapore after his sojourn in the US and Middle East. The highly anticipated visit of the Congress president will be two days long and start from March 8.
Rahul Gandhi will meet Ministers and Parliamentarians of Singapore during his visit.
Rahul’s speeches at the University of California at Berkeley and New York in September last year had focused on the diaspora’s contribution to both India as well as their country of residence. He termed that Congress Party was itself born out of an “NRI movement”.
“The original Congress movement was an NRI movement. Mahatma Gandhi was an NRI, Jawaharlal Nehru came back from England, Ambedkar, Azad, Patel, these were all NRIs," Rahul said in New York.
“Every single one of them went to the outside world, saw the outside world, returned and used some of the ideas they got and transformed India,” he added.
Interestingly, this visit of Rahul Gandhi to Singapore will be his second one as he earlier went to the Lion City in June 2006 on the invitation of its founder Lee Kuan Yew. He had met several ministers, MPs and members of Indian diaspora during his trip from June 6 to 11, 2006.
Rahul’s proposed visit to Singapore and his engagement with Indian diaspora will be third one after his visit to the US and Bahrain.
During his trip to Bahrain, Rahul said, “Sam (Pitroda) and Milind (Deora) are organising a set of trips to different parts of the world. We are going to do one to Canada; we are going to do one to Singapore and we are going to do another one to the Middle East,” he added.
Rahul Gandhi’s engagement with the Indian diaspora is an effort of the Congress Party to showcase him as a leader who is prepared for the big fight in Lok Sabha elections of 2019.
