ICC T20 World Cup winning captain Rohit Sharma announced his decision to quit the shortest format of the game, just hours after he lifted the marquee trophy by beating South Africa in the final on Saturday. However, a new video has now gone viral on social media, where the skipper said he was not planning to quit T20 initially but did so as he found it to be the ideal situation to leave the cricket format.
Rohit Sharma is considered to be one of the top T20 players in the world, and as a skipper, he also cherished a successful run in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
He led Mumbai Indians to five IPL title victories in his career, before being replaced by Hardik Pandya as the captain in 2024.
Meanwhile, in the viral video, Sharma could be heard telling reporters: “I didn’t think that I would retire from T20Is. However, the situation was such that I thought it was the perfect situation for me to say goodbye.”
Sharma announced his decision to quit the T20I format during the post-match conference.
When he was asked about his future in T20Is, The Hitman said, “This was my last game as well. Honestly, I have enjoyed it since the time I started playing this format and nothing is a better time than this to say goodbye to this format.
“I have loved every moment of this. I started my India career playing this format. I wanted to win the cup and say goodbye.”
Rohit, who was also a part of the 2007 T20 World Cup winning team, led India to its second title in the shortest format with a nail-biting 7-run win at the Kensington Oval in Barbados.
