There will be a visual treat for visitors going to Sentosa as the island resort is organising a three-week long sand festival christened ‘Sandsational fun at Sentosa’ during September to celebrate its 45th anniversary.
The festival will commence from September 1, featuring more than 30 larger-than-life sand sculptures – some over 5 metres tall – spread over 2,400 square metres on Siloso Beach. These sand sculptures will be grouped into three zones, each showcasing a different experience. The festival will continue till September 17.
Visitors in the first zone will be welcomed by 15 sculptors inspired by Singaporeans’ everyday life. This will be a multi-sensory exhibit, having visual and audio storytelling,
The second zone will be devoted to the special sand artworks created by 14 world-renowned sand masters including Sudarshan Patnaik of India. The international sand sculpting championship, which runs from August 28 to 31, will have artists from different nations create sand works based on the theme, 'Imagination'.
In the third zone, local sand artist Joo Heng Tan will be creating interactive sand art pieces where visitors will be able to ‘step into’ the art pieces. Joo Heng has displayed his artworks in over 70 cities across 20 countries.
In addition to this, children aged 5-12 years old will also be able to join a drawing competition expressing their vision for Singapore 2040. The winning entry will be transformed into a sand art piece by Joo Heng himself.
The sand sculptures, which are made only of sand and water, will use a total of 1.2 million kilogrammes of sand which will be recycled after the event.
Visitors can also head over to the Merlion Plaza and be entertained by the dazzling Merlion Magic Light. This iconic and ever-popular light and music show will feature a new neon theme starting 1 September.
Lynette Ang, Chief Marketing Officer at Sentosa Development Corporation, said, “In our continuing engagement with the local community and tourists, we are constantly looking to enhance our ‘always-on’ calendar of events and build signature events that will put Singapore on the world map. “
She added, “Capitalising on Sentosa’s unique assets of sun, sea and sand, the sand festival is a befitting way to celebrate the island’s 45th anniversary. We are delighted to keep our gates open for all locals to come celebrate with us at The State of Fun!”
Meanwhile, Singapore residents will enjoy free entry into Sentosa via the Sentosa Express and Sentosa Gateway from September 4 to 8 as part of the resort’s celebrations.
