The elevation of Halimah Yacob from humble beginnings to the top post of the President of Singapore has been widely hailed by the Self Help Groups (SHGs) of Singapore. They hoped that she will champion the causes of all sections of the society, including families, women and workers.
Terming the first woman President as an embodiment of excellence, true grit and determination, a press statement from the four SHGs said, “Mdm Halimah’s wide repertoire of knowledge and experience will serve her well in her new role. Known for her passion in championing the interests of families, women and workers, the SHGs are confident that Mdm Halimah will place these causes among her priorities in building a better community and society for the betterment of all Singaporeans.”
The four Self-help Groups (SHGs) that have congratulated Mdm Halimah on becoming the President include Singapore Indian Development Association (SINDA), Chinese Development Assistance Council (CDAC), the Eurasian Association (EA) and Yayasan MENDAKI (MENDAKI).
K Barathan, CEO of Singapore Indian Development Association (SINDA), said, "Madam Halimah has been an exemplary figure in caring for all communities and this is evident through her close relationships with the self-help groups."
He added, "On behalf of SINDA and the Indian community, I am confident that she will continue her efforts in championing the needs of all Singaporeans with renewed passion, dedication and vigour. Given her wealth of experience, a stronger and more cohesive nation will be fostered under her leadership."
Pok Cheng Chong, Executive Director, Chinese Development Assistance Council (CDAC) said, “We congratulate Madam Halimah Yacob on becoming the eighth President of Singapore. She had been a strong leader of the union and she is also a passionate advocate for social causes."
He added, "We are confident that she will be a President who champions for the well-being of all Singaporeans. We are also
confident that she will continue to support the Self-Help Groups in uplifting the less privileged in our communities and contributing to the continued success of multi-racial Singapore.”
Benett Theseira, President, Eurasian Association, said, “The Eurasian Association would like to extend our heartiest congratulations to Mdm Halimah. We are delighted that Singapore will have our first female President."
He added, "Her experience in the trade unions, social services sector and public service will stand her in good stead to continue to work for the good of all Singaporeans as she performs her duties as the President of Singapore. With passion for the nation, her commitment to service and helping people, we will strive towards great heights together.”
Rahayu Buang, CEO, MENDAKI, said, “In the various projects that she was Advisor to, Mdm Halimah had been instrumental in bringing together expertise within the community to help provide innovative solutions and ideas. What stood out for us is her humility and sincerity in wanting to help others. These qualities are what endear her to whoever she comes into contact with. We are confident that she will put her heart and soul as President to bring communities together and put the interests of Singapore and Singaporeans as top priority.”
The SHGs fully support her in building a better home and a better future for all Singaporeans. They will continue to seek opportunities for collaborations to enhance our outreach in response to her call for everyone to keep a look out for one another and helping our fellow Singaporeans so that we can all benefit from the success of our country.
