In a Dubai event ahead of the release of Jawan, the film’s lead, superstar Shah Rukh Khan, had urged the audiences to come and watch the movie at least for his ganja (bald) look. It appears that viewers everywhere have responded eagerly, because the film has made INR 520.79 crore (USD63.5 million) gross globally, in just the opening weekend.
Directed by Tamil filmmaker Atlee, the pan-India film also stars Nayanthara and Vijay Sethupathi, plus Deepika Padukone in a special appearance. It hit the screens worldwide on September 7 in Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu. The box office figure was released today by Red Chillies Entertainment, makers of the film.
“Rewriting history at the box office Rs 520.79 crore as gross worldwide box office collection. Highest weekend collection ever (sic),” read the post from the production house.
At the worldwide box office, the high-octane action thriller collected INR 129.6 crore on day one, making it the biggest opening day in the history of Hindi cinema globally, according to the makers. The film made INR 110.87 crore on day two; INR 144.22 crore on day three; and INR 136.1 crore on day four.
Jawan, a father-son story at its core, highlights various social and political issues through its hero, essayed by Shah Rukh.
According to Bollywood trade analyst Taran Adarsh, Jawan is the fastest to hit the INR 250 crore mark in India.
