Shangri La Dialogue, diaspora engagement, honouring Gandhiji, regional security all on PM’s agenda during Singapore trip starting May 31
In the run-up to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming keynote address at the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore on June 1, Connected to India asked Dr Vijay Chauthaiwale, head of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Foreign Affairs Cell, about the high profile visit.
Dr Chauthaiwale said that the PM will focus on enhancing bilateral cooperation with Singapore as well as regional issues. He added that people of Indian origin have had a great role in making Singapore one of the world’s most developed countries and “Modiji” is trying to ensure that success spreads to other countries in the region.
“The PM is trying to reach the unreached,” Dr Chauthaiwale said. “He is taking the Act East policy as his total diplomacy. He will address a lot of current issues facing ASEAN security, the new dynamic with North Korea and the issues of South China will be touched upon. The Shangri La Dialogue has created a buzz in the last few years because of its focus on security and geostrategic issues.”
Modi will also hold bilateral talks with Singapore premier Lee Hsien Loong on the morning of June 1 as well as unveil a plaque commemorating the scattering of Mahatma Gandhi’s ashes from Clifford Pier in 1948.
