Singapore Repertory Theatre kicks off 2020 with The Lifespan of a Fact, exploring the theme of fake news versus truths.
Based on a ‘true-ish’ story, a determined young fact checker Levi is about to stir up trouble. His demanding editor has given him a big assignment – apply his skill to a groundbreaking piece by unorthodox author John D’Agata.
Together, they take on the high-stakes world of publishing in this new comedy of conflict. The ultimate showdown between truth and fiction is about to begin – with undeniably
delicious consequences.
The production had been a smash hit on Broadway and hailed by The New York Times as “terrifically engaging,” and The Wall Street Journal as “a smart, rib-bustingly funny play”.
The play stars Ghafir Akbar (Guards at the Taj), Jamil Schulze and Janice Koh (Hand to God), directed by Daniel Slater (Shakespeare in the Park – Romeo & Juliet).
"What I want the audience to witness is the clash of two opposite, absolutist beliefs — two people so diametrically opposed that even the editor Emily Penrose, with all her wisdom and experience, struggles to reconcile them," said Slater.
"And in the midst of this clash, I want the audience to remember that there is another man at the heart of this story: the young Levi, whose motivation for throwing himself from the Stratosphere Tower is what John’s essay — and by extension the play — seeks to understand."
The Lifespan of a Fact opens February 25 at KC Arts Centre – Home of SRT. Tickets are available on SISTIC.
