A massive crowd gathered at Mumbai's Bandra Kurla Complex today as Apple CEO Tim Cook threw open the gates to the company’s first store in India.
Fans, mediapersons and celebrities were all part of the dynamic launch of the 28,000 sq ft store.
As Apple celebrates more than 25 years in India, Cook will inaugurate Apple's second retail store in New Delhi on Thursday.
Cook, in India for the big launches, has been on a whirlwind tour. He tweeted, "The energy, creativity, and passion in Mumbai is incredible! We are so excited to open Apple BKC — our first store in India."
The company is marking a major expansion in its India operations with the opening of its first Apple Store locations in the country, along with new environmental initiatives and a key milestone in the rapidly growing community of Indian developers.
“At Apple, our mission is to enrich lives and empower people around the world,” said Cook. “India has such a beautiful culture and an incredible energy, and we’re excited to build on our long-standing history — supporting our customers, investing in local communities, and working together to build a better future with innovations that serve humanity.”
Bollywood celebrities gathered for a launch gala yesterday, sharing selfies with Cook on social media.
The tech giant currently has a share of about 4 per cent in India's huge smartphone market dominated by Chinese and South Korean manufacturers, primarily due to high prices of its products.
According to a statement, the company is now focusing on a retail push in the world's second largest mobile phone market and has also started expanding its local manufacturing footprint.
Cook will also meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his Delhi visit for the store launch, according to reports.
