The UAE Cabinet, chaired by Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, approved the issuing of a Federal Law on Consumer Protection.
The move is in line with government endeavours to guarantee the protection of consumers and stability of prices in accordance with best practices through continuous development of legislations that affect the lives of UAE citizens and residents.
To continue providing adequate protection to consumers, especially in an age of technological advancement and accelerated growth through electronic commerce, is the aim of the law.
The law aims on ensuring that:
- Distribution patterns are tailored to consumers' needs
- Goods and services are delivered according to production
- Practices that may have negative impacts on consumers are limited
- Sustainable consumption is encouraged
- Consumers are granted the right to choose freely with fair prices
The law also aims to provide necessary conditions for creating a free market and encourages the creation of a code of ethics for goods and services producers and distributors.
The law once issued, will:
- Regulate the work of suppliers, advertisers and commercial agents with regard to consumer protection
- Control price increases under unusual circumstances
- Ensure implementation of guarantees for goods and services provided by the producer or principal
- Regulate e-commerce work
Besides this the law will also determine the applicable penalties and grievances in this regard.
