As International Day of Yoga celebrations kick off around the world, the United Arab Emirates has also announced its plans for various activities as part of the event.
The main programme in Dubai will be organised at Zabeel Park on June 21 with mass yoga sessions to be held in Ajman, Sharjah, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah. All these events are being organised under the auspices of the Consulate General of India in Dubai and several Indian associations.
"Yoga has played a significant role in promoting peace and tolerance. Through the years, the popularity of the celebrations has grown consistently, extending to government departments like the Dubai Sports Council and Dubai Municipality. More schools have also been practising yoga,” said Consul-General of India to Dubai, Vipul.
Besides the common yoga protocol, there will also be competitions, cultural programmes, a documentary screening and several other activities.
“Last year, nearly 4,000 people participated in the Yoga Day events at Zabeel Park. Given that June 21 falls on a weekend this year, we are expecting greater numbers in terms of participation,” said Vipul.
Many Indian organizations will also be participating including Isha Yoga Foundation, Art of Living, Heartfulness Yoga and Raja Yoga.
At Sharjah, the venue for the yoga session will be Sharjah Cricket Stadium. In the Emirate of Ajman, yoga enthusiasts can go to the Indian Association Ajman to participate in the programme. In Ras Al Khaimah, the American University will host a yoga session. There will also be a meditation programme held at the Etihad Hall in Umm Al Quwain on June 22.
