A US military aircraft carrying 104 deported illegal Indian immigrants landed in the north Indian city of Amritsar city on Wednesday.

The flight arrived at the Shri Guru Ramdas Ji International Airport at around 1.55 pm, reported The Tribune.

The Indians were deported on a C-17 plane that took off from San Antonio, Texas, on Tuesday.

Sources told NDTV that each deported Indian national onboard the flight is “verified”, indicating New Delhi’s involvement in the process.

The deportation was part of Donald Trump’s massive crackdown against illegal immigrants after his inauguration on January 20.

Several such flights are likely to arrive in India in the coming days.

Trump-Modi phone call

After a phone call with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi last month, Trump said New Delhi would take necessary steps in repatriating its nationals illegally staying in America.

Trump had said India will do “what is right” when it comes to taking back illegal immigrants.

The deportation took place just days before Modi’s scheduled visit to the US, the prime minister’s first since Trump started his stint as president for the second time.
As per data released by the Pew Research Centre, approximately 725,000 illegal immigrants from India live in the US.
