In a phone call with Indian Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi, Singapore's PM Lee Hsien Loong assured him that Indian migrants in the island-state will be cared for, "just as we care for Singaporeans".
Giving details on the phone call in a Facebook post, PM Lee said, "The migrant workers made personal sacrifices to come to work here. They have made many contributions to Singapore, so we have a responsibility for them."
He also thanked PM Modi for the help that India rendered to bring home Singaporeans from India recently.
The two leaders discussed the COVID-19 pandemic situations in both countries – with Singapore in the midst of the circuit breaker and India having implemented a nationwide lockdown since late March. It was "not a simple decision in a huge country of 1.3 billion people," PM Lee noted.
He added, "India and Singapore are strategic partners with extensive economic ties. We agreed to work together on the challenges posed by the pandemic, keep supply chains intact, and keep essential supplies flowing."
