The Wuhan coronavirus has now resulted in 132 deaths in mainland China, with nearly 6000 confirmed cases in the country and has spread to countries across the world. Here are the latest updates on the disease.
Death toll crosses 100
In the latest figures coming from China, authorities have confirmed that 132 people have died in mainland Chine from the Wuhan coronavirus, with the total number of confirmed cases in the country rising to nearly 6000.
There have been at least 100 deaths in China's Hubei province, of which Wuhan is the capital. The other fatalities have been reported elsewhere in China, including the first death in Beijing.
As per reports, Germany and Japan have both reported cases of patients who tested positive for coronavirus, but who had not visited Wuhan confirming human to human transmission of the disease.
US warns against travel to China
The United States on Monday warned its citizens against travel to China. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention raised its travel precaution for China to the highest level, which advises travellers to "avoid nonessential travel" to the country.
The CDC has also said it is now monitoring for symptoms of the virus among passengers arriving at 20 US airports with enhanced screening at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York, San Francisco International Airport, Los Angeles International Airport, Chicago's O'Hare International Airport and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.
US President Donald Trump tweeted on Monday, offering China whatever help it needed.
Hong Kong to seal some borders with mainland China
Hong Kong's Chief Executive Carrie Lam said on Tuesday that the government will "temporarily" close some of its borders with mainland China. Additionally they will not issue travel permits to mainland Chinese tourists. Four land borders will close from midnight local time on Thursday January 30, while two water borders – the Tuen Mun Ferry Terminal and the China Ferry Terminal – will also be shut.
Flights from mainland China will decrease by 50% and cross border train services as well as ferry services will be restricted.
